Watch films you will probably never see anywhere else at Dallas VideoFest

Since 1986, the Video Association of Dallas (VAD) has introduced this city to independent, alternative and experimental narrative films, videos and documentaries. In the summer, the VAD hosts the 24-Hour Video Race, a competition where filmmakers make a film in 24 hours. Many of these contestants are first time filmmakers. This year, high school students dominated the competition.

In the fall, the VAD puts on the big show with the Dallas VideoFest. This was the second year the community got together to experience “Expanded Cinema,” a presentation that was broadcast on the walls of the Omni Hotel in Downtown Dallas.

“I do try to see things that are different,” says Bart Weiss, Dallas VideoFest artistic director.

Weiss brings unique pieces from around the world. And this year, with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, VideoFest will show films like “True Tales,” the story of Jack Ruby’s favorite stripper and “City of Hate: Dallas and the Assassination.” The program will also include a piece called “Unspoken Speech,” a community project that honors the memory of JFK through 351 words of the speech that he was suppose to give in Dallas.

But VideoFest always has something for the whole family. Children ages 8-12 participated in the animation workshop hosted by animator Keith Alcorn, co-creator of “Jimmy Neutron.”

The Dallas VideoFest kicked off with a pre-show that included “Expanded Cinema” and the animation workshop. It officially starts Oct. 9 with “True Tales” and an opening night party for badge holders. The party includes a burlesque show.

Buy a pass and experience five days of a truly unique cinema. Most of the films will be shown at the new Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson.
